]]>Stools are such a fun piece of furniture to paint. If you've followed my blog, you'll see I've painted a few piano stools in the past. This little stool belonged to my mother-in-law. She actually had two of them. After she passed away I brought them home knowing I could do something with them. One of them I ended up painting to match my daughter's dresser so she could use it as a vanity stool in her college apartment. I then built a shelf for her bathroom, painted it to mach and painted some mason jars to add to her existing neutral decor. You can see pics below.
The other one I decided to exercise a bit more creativity to sell at an upcoming local show. I knew I wanted to do something colorful, so I painted an ombre effect on the bottom half and decoupaged the top with a beautiful peacock. I then painted the edges to blend the peacock design onto the sides. It turned out great and was one of the first pieces I sold at my booth during the show!
I love going to antique shows and shops. It's so much fun finding vintage items that can repurposed. Below are a few examples of some recently completed pieces. You can find these and much more when you Shop the Boutique!
During the first half of the 20th century most homes had humidors in their living rooms. A homemaker usually placed one next to her husband's favorite chair, and smokers stored their tobacco and smoking accessories in the copper lined cabinet. The copper lining helped keep the tobacco fresh.
This particular cabinet is likely from the 1920's. It originally had a black marble top (you can see it in the last picture), but has since been removed. It is otherwise in excellent condition. A little clean up and some furniture polish further brought out its beauty. Nothing else needed for this unique item!
]]>Collect things you love, that are authentic to you, and your house becomes your story.

I instantly fell in love with this antique table. Especially those legs! Honestly, I would have loved to merely clean it up and keep it stained, but unfortunately, the back panel of the table was completely split and the top was split as well. I soon realized it was going to take some major repair to get this table solid again.
I began by taking the table apart, which was not an easy task since the entire table was put together with dowel pins. Some of them were broken on the one side, which paved the way to taking it apart. Getting it back together required new dowel pins, wood glue, bondo and pipe vices. Not to mention lots of elbow grease!
Given the wood repair and bondo, I had no choice but to paint this beauty, but I opted to keep the top as rustic as possible to maintain some of the piece's original charm.
The end result? A new look for an old piece that can now be enjoyed for many more years to come!

Rustic Barn Boutique was officially launched in October of 2017. After having a successful career in graphic design and owning my own design company, Graficus Design Group, for over 25 years, I decided to pursue an avenue to break away from the computer and put my creative juices to work with my bare hands…much like the designing I did back in college before computers took center stage. I’ve always had an immense love for interior decorating and unique pieces of furniture with character. Refinishing pieces of furniture and creating unique pieces of home décor seemed like a natural next step. Hence, Rustic Barn Boutique was born.
In October of 2018 I made a last minute decision to enter my first show as a vendor in Lawrenceburg, IN. The show was Ruffles and Rust. I had little time to prepare but did my best. My booth was very simplistic, however, especially compared to some of the other vendors. Despite this, I did quite well. So when I decided to return to Ruffles and Rust in Hamilton, OH in November of that same year, I really wanted to step up my game.
Having designed my logo in 2017, I really wanted to continue the theme of a rustic barn for my backdrop. I went on a mission to find authentic barn wood to meet that end. After much searching, I found Upcycled Creations in Marysville, Ohio (now located in Dublin, Ohio). The owner, Roy, had recently dismantled an old barn, and the wood was exactly what I was looking for. When Roy sent me pictures of the barn from when it was still standing, I knew I needed this wood!
According to Roy, in 1910, the Smiley family built this barn on Monkey Hollow Road in Sunbury, Ohio. In 2018, the barn was dismantled and used by Upcycled Creations to make several barn doors, a farmhouse table with benches, floating shelves, a mantel and railings for use in the house on the same property. Fortunately, Roy had more of the barn wood left!
I mocked up my design idea for the backdrop in Photoshop and sent it to Roy. I asked if he could make me a frame for my logo too, so I could hang it on my backdrop. This was my vision...
I couldn't have been more pleased when Roy sent me pictures of the completed doors. He created a total of 3 doors, each 2" thick, measuring 6 feet high and 45 inches wide.
The next challenge was to create a checkout station for my booth. I once again went on the hunt, as I was running out of time to custom build one. Fortunately, I ran across a pseudo bar on Facebook Marketplace in Springfield, Ohio (see bottom left picture). I made the trip to Springfield first and then headed to Marysville and somehow managed to get all 3 doors, the logo frame AND the pseudo bar in the back of my Kia Sorento! I dismantled the top portion of the bar and hand-painted the bottom to match my backdrop. It turned out great and all the pieces came together beautifully in my 20' x 10' booth at the show!
Oh the holidays! It's my favorite time of the year. I can hardly wait to put out that first pumpkin once mid-September rolls around. Halloween comes and goes and the preparation for Thanksgiving begins. But my all time favorite is by far Christmas! It's always been my general rule of thumb to refrain from putting out Christmas decorations until after Thanksgiving. This year was no different, but I'll admit I was itching to get to it, especially since this was our first year in our new home for the holidays and I had some major planning to do!
You see, I had a "system" at our old house; a plan in place of just how to decorate our house for each holiday. But this year I had a blank canvas and no plan. There was some trial and error until I was pleased with the end result, but it's still a work in progress. I already have bigger plans for next Christmas!
The first dilemma was a Christmas tree. We had pitched our old one prior to the move so we needed a new one...a GRAND one for our 2-story family room. And so the hunt began with the mindset of the bigger, the better! We settled on a 12 ft. tree and boy is it BIG! Perhaps even a little too big...at least diameter wise, but I still love it and was excited to keep all the decorations in our family room on the neutral and rustic side.
I bought new stockings (with fur!) for our mantle and used predominantly white ornaments on the tree. The Christmas "color" would come in other rooms in the house; a little red and green in the kitchen, green and gold in the dining room and blues, magenta and purples in our front "lounge" room. The office would be decked out with green and burgundy and the powder bathroom with copper and brown.
Creating little vignettes throughout the house with my collection of Santas and snow men is always fun and this year was no different. Vignettes are an easy way to give your home a welcoming and polished feel, be it during the holidays or any time of the year. My corner kitchen window provided the perfect place to group my rustic Santa and reindeer, as did my foyer entry table.
But the real magic happens at night when the Christmas lights illuminate the house, both inside and out! The only drawback is how dark the house feels after Christmas when all the lights come down!

Bittersweet day. We said our final goodbyes to our house of 22 years ?. Lots of cherished memories here and lots of tears flowing. Loved raising our daughter here and will miss this house and our sweet neighbors. We put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this house, remodeling every room over the years (you can see of them below). It will always hold a special place in our hearts. Now on to unpacking and creating new memories in our new home. It’s been an exhausting transition but looking forward to what lies ahead.
I immediately fell in love with this cart. It has so much character! But it definitely needed a little TLC.
Just look at it now!
Bathroom remodels can be a daunting task, but with a little planning (and patience) they can be quite rewarding. When I first laid eyes on the powder bathroom in our new house, I literally cringed. The vanity had a huge red stain on it, and the room was so dark...black toilet, black sink, black ceiling and black wallpaper (albeit with a muted print). The fixtures, although solid brass, were outdated and in no way fit within the overall decor scheme I had planned for our new home.
But ironically, the hardest part of this remodel was removing the wallpaper! Apparently the walls had not been sized prior to adhering the wallpaper, and despite steam, scraping and a few choice words, this was no easy task. To add insult to injury, the removal of the wallpaper left some pretty sizeable gouges in the drywall, which then had to be repaired.
Once the wallpaper removal was complete and drywall patched, I used Zinsser Gardz Problem Surface Sealer (by Rust-Oleum) to prepare the walls before priming and painting. I highly recommend this product if you ever find yourself dealing with torn drywall. It is easy to use and provides a hard, paintable seal over damaged drywall. With this behind me, the real fun began!
I tackled the job of priming and painting the ceiling and then painted the walls. My vision for this bathroom was a rustic old world look, so I opted for a vanity that was reminiscent of an antique wash stand. I knew I wanted to incorporate a copper vessel sink and antique looking wall mount faucet, so I went on the hunt for those first before choosing my tile backsplash and granite countertop. The old brass wall sconces were replaced with rustic textured iron wall fixtures with hammered glass. But the finishing touch was the antique mirror I found at a local antique store that pulled it all together. Voila! Mission complete!
This vintage set of three nesting tables and coordinating side table with shelf is modernized in a handsome deep mustard with translucent brown glaze. The tops are a deep Java stain. The all-wood tables feature a hand painted finish and have been protected with matte poly. This set is great for entertaining and providing extra space when needed. Available just in time for Christmas! Message for details.
A new look for an old piece. This wardrobe had good bones but needed a facelift to really make it shine.
It's been refinished inside and out. It now has a more modern look while still maintaining its vintage charm.
Finishing up this rocking horse today ?. It’s been a labor of love. I started out with 2 rocking horses...one was originally made for a special needs child and had a rather clunky base. The other reminded me more of a reindeer (can’t you just picture antlers on that beauty?). So I dismantled them both, cut down the legs of the one horse and reconfigured it to fit on the base of the other. Still planning on adding antlers to the sleeker horse and turning it into a reindeer but have to finish up this guy first. You can see the finished piece in person next weekend in my booth at Ruffles and Rust.
This solid wood table features carved shapely bevel edge legs, a finial center post, and multi-bevel edge top with ornate moldings. The top has been refinished and stained in a deep java color and the base has been painted in a sophisticated hue of yellow-green that picks up other colors well and changes character accordingly. Subtle highlights and lowlights give the base added dimension, and the entire piece has been poly coated for added durability.
Sophisticated and elegant, this would make a great table in an entry way, parlor, sitting room or just a corner to hold a beautiful floral display.
Dimensions: 32.5” wide x 28” high x 23.5” deep.
One of my favorite rooms in our old house was our kitchen. It was so warm and inviting (you can see pictures of it here). Not so much the case in our new home. This kitchen needed a lot of love and some major updates. The cabinets are all solid maple and we originally planned to try and keep them as is and just focus on the countertops and moving some things around. We started by removing the electric cooktop and microwave and building a custom hood vent. We also removed the backsplash, tore out all the countertops and removed the island to open up the space. We then prepared to pour concrete countertops.
Next we installed a new travertine tile backsplash and a new polished marble farmhouse sink to replace the old stainless steel sink (I just love this sink!). The new gas cooktop was installed, along with a pot filler but before staining the hood vent we decided to take the remodel a step further. A new island was built and a matching concrete countertop poured. We also added an inlaid tile mosaic in the floor.
Although we felt this was an improvement over the original kitchen, I still wasn't loving it (but our sweet Chloe pictured above seemed content LOL). We ultimately decided to paint the cabinets. So, I removed all the hardware, prepped all the cabinetry and began priming and painting. Meanwhile, my husband built new small display cabinets to go on top of the existing upper cabinets.
The end result was totally worth it! I love our new kitchen. It's so much brighter and more welcoming than the original design, and it flows much better with our newly remodeled family room. Plus, the addition of the new upper display cabinets really draws your eye up and captures the beauty of the 9' ceilings.
